Liverpool, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women’s tennis team claimed a 5-2 win over the Binghamton University Bearcats in the team’s Northeast Conference opener Friday evening at Elevate Fitness.
The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the match by winning two of the doubles contests. In first position, sophomore Ella Fernando (Manchester, England/Stonyhurst College) and graduate student Feriel Mahbouli (Tunis, Tunisia/Lycee 36/South Carolina State) defeated Loren Cuomo and Maria Pereira by a score of 6-3. Binghamton’s Clara Arbeloa Lopez and Caterina Casadei bested juniors Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) and Stella Simeonova (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Gymnasium of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) 6-1 in the second position, but Le Moyne senior Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos De Manta) and junior Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey) recorded a 6-4 win over Kayla Castellano and Samantha Jaros in No. 3 position doubles to secure the point for Le Moyne.
In first position singles, Cuomo defeated Mahbouli by a score of 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, Fernando earned a point for the ‘Phins in second position with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Arbeloa Lopez.
Barona bested Pereira 6-0, 6-1 in No. 4 singles, while Casares took down Casadei in third position by a score of 7-5, 3-0. Alvarez recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win over Nitya Vyas in the sixth position, and Jaros defeated Simeonova 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles match to claim a point for the Bearcats.
The Le Moyne women’s tennis team will return to the Elevate Fitness Courts in Liverpool on Sunday for a 7:30 p.m. Northeast Conference match against Saint Francis University.
