September 5—an acclaimed historical drama about the 1972 Munich Olympics tragedy—is new in theaters. When will it be available on streaming to watch at home?
Rated R, September 5 opened in limited release in an awards qualifying run on December 13. The film slowly was released in more theaters before expanding to 121 North American venues on Jan. 17.
The official summary for September 5 partially reads, “September 5 unveils the decisive moment that forever changed media coverage and continues to impact live news today. Set during the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, the film follows the ABC Sports broadcasting team who quickly shifted from sports reporting to live coverage of the Israeli athletes taken hostage.
“Through this lens, September 5 provides an important perspective on the live broadcast seen globally by millions of people at the time.”
September 5 stars Peter Sarsgaard as legendary TV executive Roone Arledge and Ben Chaplin as his mentor Marvin Bader. The film also stars John Magaro as an ABC Sports producer Geoffrey Mason, Leonie Benesch as German interpreter Marianne Gebhardt and Benjamin Walker as iconic TV ABC News anchor Peter Jennings.
In addition, legendary ABC Sports broadcast Jim McKay appears in real-life footage from the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics throughout the film.
Right now, the only way you can see September 5 is in theaters, so check your local listings for showtimes.
When September 5 comes to the home entertainment market, the first place it will be available will be on digital streaming via premium video on demand. September 5 is a Paramount Pictures release. Generally, there is a one-month window from the time a Paramount film opens in theaters to the time it arrives on PVOD.
For example, Paramount’s Smile 2 opened in theaters on Oct. 18, 2024, and debuted on PVOD on Nov. 19. More recently, Gladiator II opened in theaters on Nov. 22, 2024, and arrived on PVOD on Dec. 24.
If Jan. 17 ends up being the widest release of September 5 in theaters, viewers can expect the film to arrive on PVOD sometime around Tuesday, Feb. 18, since new digital streaming releases tend to come out on Tuesdays.
Of course, if September 5 goes into a wider release, that could change Paramount Pictures’ timeline for releasing the film on PVOD. One determining factor regarding a wider release could happen Thursday morning when the nominations are announced for the 97th Academy Awards.
Even though September 5 has largely been absent in most of the major races this awards season, it could potentially score a Best Picture nomination since the Producers Guild of America last week named the film one of its 10 Best Picture nominees for the upcoming Producers Guild Awards.
As such, if September 5 scores a Best Picture nomination for the 2025 Oscars, it wouldn’t be too big of a surprise for Paramount Pictures to give the film a larger theatrical release. If that’s the case, then expect the film to be available on PVOD about a month after its widest release in theaters.
When September 5 arrives on PVOD, it will be available on a variety of digital platforms including Prime Video, AppleTV and Fandango at Home. New PVOD titles typically are available for purchase for anywhere between $19.99 to $29.99, while digital rentals—which are good for a 48-hour period—typically run between $14.99 and $24.99.
Which Streaming Service Will Get ‘September 5’ First?
Since September 5 is a Paramount Pictures release, the film will first stream on Paramount+. You must subscribe to Paramount+ to watch September 5 on the streaming platform.
Paramount+ offers an ad-based plan called Paramount+ Essential for $7.99 a month, while the ad-free Paramount+ with Showtime plan is is $12.99 per month.
Typically, there’s a six-week to two-month window between the time a Paramount film opens in theaters and debuts on Paramount+. For example, Smile 2, which opened in theaters on Oct. 18, arrived on Paramount+ about six weeks later, on Dec.3.
Meanwhile, Gladiator II—which opened in theaters on Nov. 22, arrived on Paramount+ just under two months later on Jan. 21.
If September 5—again, taking the current wide release date into account—follows the same pattern as Smile 2 and Gladiator II, then viewers can expect it to arrive on Paramount+ anytime between Feb. 28 and March 14.
If September 5 expands into even more theaters, however, then viewers can expect it to be available on Paramount+ anytime between six weeks to two months after its widest theatrical release date.
Directed by Tim Fehlbaum, September 5 is currently playing in theaters.
