Elton John is still suffering from eyesight issues that have left him partially blind. However, in a recent interview discussing his new collaborative album with Brandi Carlile, John remains more determined than ever to rise above the impairment.
Back in July 2024, John contracted an eye infection whilst on holiday in France. However, the issue has obstructed his vision for over half a year. He has previously thanked an “excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me”.
At 77, John is still working tirelessly. In 2023, he headlined Glastonbury. This year, he is creating an original score for the West End musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada, based on the book by Lauren Weisberger. He won’t be able to see this musical because of his poor eyesight.
In a recent interview, John insists on accomplishing as much as he can. “If I don’t push myself, what’s the point in carrying on? Just be ‘Elton John’ for the rest of my life? Which would have filled me with absolute fucking horror.”
John refuses to be pessimistic despite his failing health. “I’m an optimist permanently,” he says. “I’ve got bad eyesight at the moment. There have been days where I’ve been miserable, but then I think about how lucky I am. I’ve got a new respect for sight-impaired people and people who are totally blind, some of whom I’m in touch with.”
“But to hell with it,” he continued. “I’ve got a great life, and hopefully my sight will improve. What she’s saying is I’ve overcome a lot. This is not going to beat me. I’ve beaten addiction, I’ve beaten health issues, and I can pick myself up and dust myself off.”
His new album, Who Believes in Angels? is set for release on April 4th through Island EMI Records.
