The Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly rescinded their trade offer for Mark Williams. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania , the Lakers medical staff found “multiple issues” that led him to fail his medical examination with the franchise. As such, Williams will now remain with the Charlotte Hornets. Therefore, Dalton Knecht, among others, will stay with JJ Redick’s team.
Rescinding trades is highly uncommon in the NBA. However, teams do have the right to cancel a trade if there are legitimate concerns. Unfortunately for the Lakers, the trade deadline has now passed and they have a full 15-man roster. As such, they’re unable to find a replacement big man on the trade or free agent market.
“Sources tell me that the Lakers have failed Mark Williams on his physical exam,” Charania said. “…It’s about the extent of the injury, of what they’ve got and what they’ve found. In that exam, clearly they’ve found some issues. People have spoken about his back being an issue, but I’m told that was not the reason of the failed physical. They found a couple of other issues in his physical exam, which they did not expect.”
