The Indian women’s tennis team will start its Billie Jean King Cup 2025 Asia-Oceania Group I campaign at the Deccan Gymkhana in Pune on Tuesday.
The Asia-Oceania Group I for the Billie Jean King Cup 2025 features six teams – hosts India, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand and Thailand.
According to the format of the tournament, all teams will play each other in a round-robin format.
Each tie is a best-of-three affair consisting of two singles and one doubles match. Once all the ties are done, the top two teams will secure promotion to the playoffs, scheduled for November this year.
The bottom two teams will be relegated to the Asia/Oceania Group II in 2026. An extra qualification spot will also be awarded to one team from any of the three Group I events worldwide – Europe/Africa, Americas or Asia/Oceania. However, the exact criteria for selecting the team has not yet been decided
The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has named a five-member team for the Billie Jean King Cup 2025 Asia-Oceania Group I campaign.

The five-member team was chosen by the AITA based on rankings, recent performances and player availability.
Teenage prodigy Maaya Rajeshwaran has been named as the reserve player.
Vishal Uppal has been named as captain of the squad while Radhika Kanitkar will serve as the coach.
The Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as the Fed Cup, is one of the most prestigious international tennis events for women. It brings together top-ranked players from different countries to compete in a team format. The tournament is the women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup.
India finished third in the Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group I, played in the People’s Republic of China last year.
The last time India made the playoffs of the tournament was in 2021 when a 3-1 defeat to Latvia ended their hopes of reaching the competition’s qualifiers and playing for a place at the Billie Jean King Cup finals.
