The UK and Ireland release date for Doc Martin star Caroline Catz’s new movie The Extraordinary Miss Flower has been confirmed.
The “biographical performance film” has just been screened at the BFI London Film Festival, and after more festival screenings in Dublin (February 28) and Glasgow (March 1 and 2), the film will be released in cinemas on May 9.
The film stars Icelandic singer Emilíana Torrini (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers‘ ‘Gollum’s Song’) in her debut acting role, telling the story of her friend Zoe’s late mum Geraldine.

In the ’60s and ’70s she received a suitcase full of love letters, letters that formed the basis of Torrini’s latest album. Torrini will perform the songs, with Catz acting as the titular Miss Flower.
The project will also feature people like Richard Ayoade, Alice Lowe, and Nick Cave in supporting roles, while Sophie Ellis-Bextor provides vocals.
“Being involved with this film was a mad and riveting experience,” Torrini said. “I’ve never been on a film set like this before, and I still don’t really know what happened. I am in total awe of Zoe [Flower], Iain [Forsyth] and Jane [Pollard] to pull this off in such a short time.

“The artists and crew were incredible and showed such a deep understanding of where these songs came from, emotionally and creatively. A huge thank you to Sam [Dyson, executive producer] and the team at Distiller for believing in the project and supporting us.”
A few reviews of the film have already been released following its BFI screening. Deadline called it an “extraordinary experimental biopic” with “psychedelic charms”. The piece explains that the film keeps a lot about its subject a mystery, but “the enigma of Miss Flower is never less than intoxicating.”
The Extraordinary Miss Flower will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on May 9.
