Luka Doncic is now officially a member of the Los Angeles Lakers after they acquired him in a shocking trade on Saturday night from the Dallas Mavericks for a package centered around superstar big man Anthony Davis.
It is debatable what this will do to the Lakers’ slim hopes of contending for the NBA championship this season. However, they will now have another generational superstar to build around for possibly the next decade, and there were plenty who were concerned about their ability to land such a player who would succeed LeBron James as the face of the franchise.
Doncic took to his X (formerly known as Twitter) account to express some gratitude for this new opportunity.
He also gave thanks to the Mavs organization after six seasons and change with it.
Doncic will become the latest in a long line of legendary Lakers guards or wings that includes Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant and James. At age 25 (he will turn 26 on Feb. 28), he can carry the franchise for up to a decade and go from a great superstar player to a transcendent one if he delivers at least one NBA championship.
He is averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, 7.8 assists and 2.0 steals a game this season. He led the league in scoring average last season with 33.9 points per game while leading an underwhelming Mavs team all the way to the NBA Finals.
Doncic is already third all-time in NBA regular season scoring average and second all-time in playoff scoring average.
